A Brief Explanation of Lysteria Momocytogenes

March 8th, 2010 . by admin

The potential for developing a bacterial infection is often as close the environment that surrounds a person. For example, lysteria monocytogenes is an intracellular bacterium that causes a disease called Listeriosis. While it ic comparatively rare, it is most often found in the elderly and newborns. Those who have weakened immune systems are also at risk for infection from this potentially lethal strain. Found in animals, birds, some fish and shellfish, soil, and silage, it is estimated that the bacteria also reside in as much as 10% of the human population. Infected patients have been successfully treated with penicillen, ampicillin, or even trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole for those who are allergic to penicillen.
